Applying Audience Theory
Maleficent:
Hypodermic needle:
Disney apply's the hypodermic needle in Maleficent by having a curse that can be broken by true loves kiss this is accepted by the audience , as Maleficent regrets the cure she puts on the child and tries to take it back but once the child pricks her finger, Maleficent's true was accepted as it awoken the child form her deep slumber this was accepted because the true loves kiss was to save the child. The act of the true kiss is seen through a lot of other Disney films the only difference from the other films is that the true loves kiss came from a woman and not a male and also the fact that Maleficent had to learn her mistake that she regretted, to be able to have given her the true love kiss. This conveys that we shouldn't do things in such haste and learn to let go of any hate as we can hurt innocent people which brings the message across to the audience it also shows that a true love kiss does not have to be from a male which the audience excepts and understands.
Uses Of Gratification:
Disney's most popular gratification used is entertainment diversion as the film is set in a mythical place that allows the audience to enjoy and get away from real life and allows them to escape to they mythical place in the movie, and also it lets the audience to get pleasure form just relaxing and watching a Disney film. Maleficent also has traces of personal identity as Maleficent is the queen and Aurora is a princess younger audiences would aspire to become a princess and it makes them want to follow them also by using a famous and well known actress such as Angelina Jolie it would make the audience want to watch it as she already has a big fan base.
Personal identity also is shown through the independence and strength of Maleficent who shows you don't need to be portrayed as the damsel in distress all the time.
Maleficent also has traces of Social relationship as people who have watched the movie would be able to talk to other people about the film and also radio interviews that take place allow the audience to know when and where the film will be released.
Cultural Commonality:
Maleficent was filmed in the UK Petworth Park West Sussex which is also where Maleficent's moor was located and set.
The audience of the film are based around everywhere within the UK and some do live near West Sussex, but it also has elements of a mythical place which can relate to everyone in the audience as it is make believe.
Hall's Reading:
Preferred Reading: The audience would feel that Maleficent did the right thing by putting a curse on the Kings daughter , after what he did to her and the pain he had caused her, they would feel that she did the right thing.Negotiated reading: The audience would feel that she did the right thing but they would also think that she should not have done it to Aurora as she was just a little baby who had not done anything wrong,Opposition Reading: The audience would be completely against what Maleficent did as the child did not deserve it and they wont like her character as they would think that she is punishing and innocent child for what her farther did.
Sightseers:
Hypodermic needle:
Film 4 get the idea the British people are simple and boring and that we like to travel to all sorts of museum within our country and that it also shows that we don't really get along with others except the ones that drink in a pub or that we chose to get along with, the audience just goes along with it and just watches it for pure entertainment and don't think about the characters that are created to represent them.
Uses Of Gratification:
Sightseers is a hybrid of black comedy and a hint of crime in there but this film has entertainment diversion as this is a comedy it allows the audience to relax and enjoy the film it allows the audience to focus on someone else's life and not there own it gives them a chance to forget there lives and watch someone else's.Personal identity is seen in here as Tina and Chris are lovers and they love each other which our audience can relate to if they have a partner that they are with and also in the film we see Tina and Chris go to museums that others may enjoy so they could relate to that also some people enjoy caravanning and this could appeal to some of the audience as they may enjoy caravanning around certain areas and also travelling around the UK.
Cultural Commonality:
The film was set and located in England mainly in North England where our audience lives and they could relate to this as they will have the same dialect as them. The director Ben Wheatley was born in England Essex just like many of our target audience and it's something they would have with some of our audience member.
Hall's Reading:
Preferred Reading: The audience would feel that Tina and Chris are in love as everything they do is for one another and they would find it funny as they would do stupid things to just prove them self to each other. Negotiated Reading: The audience would feel that Tina and Chris are crazy and something is wrong with them as they kill other people but they would see that they do it because they love each other.Opposition Reading:The audience would feel that what they did is very wrong and they had no right and actual reason to kill those people.

Case Study: Sightseers & Maleficent
Sightseers:
Sightseers is an original Film4 film that film is based on two people who seem to be average but little did Tina know that her boyfriend Chris was actually a murderer, Chris wanted to spend time with Tina in her holiday and decided to take her caravanning around London countryside , whilst caravanning they both encounter troubles which leads Chris to killing a man and Tina falling for him even more , Tina soon becomes a part of the murderers but gets carried away as she starts to kill due to jealousy and lack of attention.
A- I would recommend this to people who are 16 and over as there is a good amount of blood and violence that takes place, I also think this because people who are younger may not be able to stand blood or the gruesomeness of the violence,
G- I think that this would appeal to both genders as in the film you see that its got both genders in there and I also think that because the film hasn't been aimed to a certain type of gender, also because the storyline hints with a bit of romance it would appeal to females just as well as males.
I-I think that people who are interested in camping or caravanning would like this film because the film is to do with the caravanning and I also think that if you like a bit of comedy mixed with crime and adventure you would like this film
L- The film was located in around North London you can tell this by the setting of the film and also the dialect that is spoken from Tina and Chris gives you the idea on where it is located.
E-I think that this film ethnicity is mainly white because in the film the main characters are white and also through out the film the main type of ethnicity that is seen is white, however I do think that people of other ethnicity can watch this as they would find an interest in the film.
Maleficent:
![]() |
Maleficent is a Disney film it is about a fairy who was once a happy girl but one day she got tricked by someone she thought she could love but he broke her trust by removing her wings and making her useless and that is where the story begins Maleficent becomes vengeful and one day she find out that her enemy is having a baby girl Maleficent curses the child that on her sixteenth she shall prick her finger with a spin wheel and fall into a deep slumber and that only a true loves kiss shall awaken her, as the child gets older Maleficent grows a strong bond with the child and she immediately starts and regrets the curse she made, the little girl soon finds out about the curse and she finds a spin wheel and her finger gets pricked, once she falls into a deep slumber no one could wake her only Maleficent could for her kiss was a true loves kiss once the child had awoken she helped Maleficent get her wings back and she won her battle and at the end Maleficent was once again happy person and the little girl Aurora was added to the happiness and lived with Maleficent.
A- I would recommend this to everyone as it is a family film and it would appeal to all, if a child was to watch it I would advise they watch with a parent as they may get frightened easily.
G- I would say this would appeal to both genders but more towards females because of the main character is a girl and it would make them want to watch it, it would appeal to males as well because of the little fight scene but it think that it is more to the females.
I-If your interested in mythical creatures and your hum drum fairy tale I think you would enjoy it, I also think that if you are interested in magic or adventures this film would be to your liking.
L-This film was located in a make believe place where loads of effects were used to create they mystical theme and also for the palace a castle and a field was used.
